Using The Past as a Learning Tool

I believe heavily in not bearing any resentments but we all must use the past as a valuable learning experience otherwise what's to stop us from making those same mistakes again in the future. I cringe when I think back to some of the things I have done but I only retain my memory of them so that they can be used as stepping stone lessons because there are still many years ahead of me and I don't want these things to ever be repeated.

A great movie and also one of my favorites is "Groundhog Day" with Bill Murray. Bill was able to relive this one day over and over again until he got it right. Wouldn't it be great if we could all have a day like this? But unfortunately if we were given a day like this most likely we would use it unwisely. I know back when I was in grade school the most important thing to me was getting a good grade on one particular test and chances are I would use my one day to make everything right back then when I was just a child.

Someone who I thought was a friend expected me to just forget everyone elses past mistakes but yet this did not apply to the others when they looked at me. If somebody, in the past, had taken advantage of me or had done wrong by me I was not to use that when making present day decisions but just forget their past dealings and extend my trust to them as if nothing had ever happened. This is like the scenario if you always insist on crossing a particular street when walking home and yet every time you do this you get robbed on that street then wouldn't it be better if in the future we went another way?

If I get lousy customer service when dealing with a certain store then chances are I will use that lousy customer service experience as a lesson and not do business with that store again. Doesn't this make sense?
