Innovative Distance Learning Format Gives Teachers an Inside Look at What It's Really Like to be a Principal

Bourbonnais, IL (PRWeb) April 4, 2007 -- Developed in collaboration with the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), Olivet Nazarene University's (ONU) Master of Arts in Education (M.A.), School Improvement Leadership program takes distance learning to a new level with a unique format that's both convenient and dynamic. Combining online accessibility with on-the-ground field work, the program enables teachers to collaborate with other educators and share best practices for applying what they learn in real-life situations. Utilizing an online classroom as well as multimedia, teachers receive first-hand knowledge of what it's like to be a leader in today's schools. There are no campus visits and teachers study when and where it is most convenient for them.

Practicums Deliver Authentic Learning
The M.A. in Education, School Improvement Leadership distance learning program includes two practicums that provide a diverse set of activities designed to prepare teachers for taking on the role of school principal or administrator. Both are organized within the context of the curriculum so they can easily fit into the busiest of schedules. Participants create a Professional Portfolio highlighting the knowledge they've gained and their ability to assume a leadership role. The end result is a masters program that goes beyond the typical distance learning format to render a truer sense of what it's like to be a principal.

Many students complete the program in less than two years. Graduates of the ONU M.A. in Education, School Improvement Leadership distance learning program may be eligible for Illinois Type 75 Administrative Certification, contingent upon passing the state test for Educational Leadership. The application deadline for the Summer 2007 term is May 4, 2007.
