San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) October 3, 2007 -- Interaction Associates Director of Learning, Barry Rosen, is among the contributors to a new book about an innovative method for developing powerful communications skills.

The book is titled, Once Upon a Time: Using Story-based Activities to Develop Breakthrough Communications Skills, by Terrence Gargiulo and published by Pfeiffer.

Barry Rosen's chapter in the new book is titled 'Listening As An Ally' and focuses on a critical management skill to develop leaders (http://www.interactionassociates.com/leadership): listening. Rosen draws on extensive expertise in exploring a simple and powerful facilitation activity aimed at developing listening skills, which are viewed increasingly as must-have skills for business leaders.

Gargiulo's book takes an innovative approach toward assessing and developing communication skills. The book?s first part explores a new communications skills model developed from research with leaders of Fortune 500 companies, including nine essential communication behaviors vital for leaders and mangers today - including modeling, telling, selecting, indexing, synthesizing, reflecting, eliciting, listening and observing. The second part of the book 75 story-based activities for developing the communication competencies identified by the model.

"Story-based activities are powerfully learner-centered," said Gargiulo. "They provide many different layers of learning experience, which is difficult to achieve with other, more formal learning methods," he added.

Barry Rosen commented, "Good listening helps leaders to understand, empathize, and engage their team members and employees. It builds rapport and trust and invariably improves the relationship. Listening is not a warm-and-fuzzy competence: it's an essential skill-set that yields significant results."

Terrence Gargiulo is a management consultant, organization development specialist and facilitator based in Monterey, California. He leads unique workshops where participants become more skilled communicators through the use of story-based activities.
